Q. "With summer activities and trips coming up, how do we prepare for medical emergencies?"
Answer:
Evaluate your current procedures. If you haven't already, establish a medical procedure and communicate it clearly to all staff. Include what to do, who to call and where crucial equipment is for various scenarios.
Look over other existing policies and procedures and make sure you are following safety guidelines. Update them accordingly as you find holes. Also review job descriptions to make sure you're not putting any staff at higher risk inadvertently.
A medical emergency may seem like a rare occurrence, but lack of preparation could open your organization up to liability and, worse, deadly consequences.
A very public reminder of the need for policy and protocol around medical emergencies is the January NFL game in which a Bills defender, Damar Hamlin, suffered a cardiac arrest. An NFL stadium might look different than a traditional workplace, but in the case of an emergency, everyone knew what to do. Your staff should, too.
